What is OnlyFans?
OnlyFans is actually almost the same as Instagram but differs in 2 major ways :
1) Explicit content is allowed – for example, erotica and pornography.
2) Influencers can add a paywall to their content.

How do I sign up?
The registration for OnlyFans is done on the homepage , there you need an email address and a password. It is also possible to sign up with your Twitter or Google account. Once you have done this, you have full access to this social media platform. At this point, however, a major shortcoming in our eyes becomes apparent: In order to follow influencers who offer their content for free, OnlyFans requires a credit card. Why credit card data is still required here remains a mystery, but could serve as a kind of age check.
How do I find influencers and performers?
After you are logged in you want to see who is available for selection – there are some suggestions in the homescreen. There is a search function, but we couldn’t get any hits when searching for usernames or specific search terms. The search is completely useless and we wonder what they were thinking.
In fact, you need a link that points directly to your profile – here the ladies and gentlemen make use of your other social media channels and post your OnlyFans link on Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat. Many sex workers also refer to their OnlyFans presence in their profiles in other communities. The possibility to take your business into your own hands far away from other (co-earning) portals is attractive because more money is left for your content and intermediate earners fall away.
Where does the hype come from?
The pandemic has increased interest in online activities and OnlyFans fills a gap here : permissive content that is banned on other social media platforms can not only be posted here, you can also monetize it directly. This led to prominent influencers setting up their accounts there and their fans following them – in Germany well-known examples here are rappers such as Tyga, Fler, Chris Brown or Cardi B .
OnlyFans criticism on the net
Where there is a lot of light, there is also a lot of shadow. Of course, OnlyFans is an ideal working environment especially for sex workers as you only have to give 20% of your earnings to OnlyFans and “intermediary earners” do not reduce your earnings – so the money spent comes directly to the one who also performs the service. However, the control measures on this platform are obviously completely overwhelmed and also the black sheep of the industry are looking there for the quick money in which you create fake profiles (with partly stolen content).
The support is also bad at the moment – here, too, they were overrun by the onslaught and questions are rarely answered promptly. Another problem that the operators of OnlyFans should address quickly is the refund of payments if they were defrauded of your money under false information of the infueces.
Furthermore, there should be a preview of the content to be expected, because after you subscribe to someone for a fee you rarely get access to explicit content, because the activation of individual posts again costs an amount. In our eyes, this should be settled with the subscription payment. The most popular example of this was the actress Bella Thorne who became very popular as a “Disney princess” and singer. She promised fans a nude photo and charged $200 – per person – to unlock the image, mind you, on top of the $20 you already had to pay to subscribe to the channel !
She set a record of earning 1 million dollars in one day, and in the first week, the total revenue is said to have reached 2 million dollars. But Bella didn’t deliver the nude photo and so many paying fans demanded their money back. This even led to OnlyFans changing their terms of use – much to the annoyance of the sex workers who maintain their OnlyFans account in an honest way. Finally, Ms. Thorne apologized for this action, but the bottom line is that it was more than worth it for her.
This is only the most prominent example of how paying customers can be cheated out of their money, and such a market attracts of course also peasants who create fake profiles with stolen content.
